RSL vs DC United Take 1 & 2

When we decided to go to DC, we thought it could be fun to see if DC United had a home game while we were there. Turns out they not only had a home game, but it was against RSL! What are the odds? Naturally, we had to go. After spending the day at the National Mall seeing some sights, we took the Metro to the game.

The infamous RFK Stadium. A new soccer specific stadium is being built and this is the last season DC will play here. It is an old, run down football stadium. They had a banner up on the top of the stadium with a countdown of how many games left at RFK.
 Warm ups
During the first 20 minutes of the game, storm clouds started to roll in. RSL was not playing great, so it wasn't a bad thing when they stopped the game due to lighting strikes. All the fans went up into the concourses while was a deluge of rain with amazing lighting and thunder.
This was the view of the clouds from where we waited. The picture below is an attempt to see the pouring rain.
After about 1 1/2 hours of a rain/lightning delay, they called the game. The field was in an awful condition and basically unplayable. They reset the game for the following night at the same time. Thankfully, we didn't have anything scheduled for the next night.
While we waited for our Metro back to the hotel, we watched the special bus go by. Haha!

TAKE 2
The game resumed around the 20th minute with a corner kick. It was strange to have a game start like that, but was awesome to be back for another night of soccer. RSL resumed the game and played well.
Petke
We ended up winning the game 1-0 on a great 1 touch goal from Luis Silva. We were hoping to be able to shake hands of the players since we were right behind their bench. Unfortunately, they shook the other teams' hands and walked off the field the other direction. However, Coach Petke walked over the talked to someone, so we were able to shake his hand and tell him it was a great game. He said thanks for coming.
