A California Christmas

This year we decided to take a family Christmas vacation and went to California. Instead of presents under the tree, our Christmas money went to a road trip.
This was the view from our hotel room.
First, we drove to San Diego. We got there at the tail end of all the rain and flooding. While we were there, we did not experience any rain and even had shorts and flip flops on one day--with hoodies on top :). It may have been cold for California, but it sure beat 25 degrees and snow.

We took a tour of the USS Midway aircraft carrier. We also saw the USS Ronald Reagan which is a currently active aircraft carrier and the last one that was commissioned.
Have you seen the size of this anchor? It's ginormous!
Future pilot :)

Under the glass of the coffee table in the Captain's quarters was a Sport's Illustrated magazine cover with a blast from the past. Do you know who that is? As a teenager, I made him shrimp salad sandwiches on a kaiser roll for lunch when he came into the deli where I worked. After the Midway visit, we drove around and saw Petco Park where the Padres play ball. We strolled through the Gaslamp District, drove by Little Italy, and stopped in Old Town to eat, sight see and shop.
The first ever texting machine :)

One of the coolest parts of our trip was a visit to the newly redone Mormon Battalion visitor's center in Old Town. The tour is interactive and very fun. Zack got geared up as a soldier, they took our picture, and the kids panned for gold. We spent Christmas Eve outside eating lunch and saw a movie.

Yes, Nicole and I are wearing shorts in this picture. We were eating sandwiches made with real sourdough bread. Yummmmmm!!
